Wireless Communications

How does cellular & digital PCS work?
Cellular and PCS service takes place over a designated band of radio frequencies and therefore requires no telephone lines. The area covered by this radio frequency is called the cellular or PCS coverage area and is often referred to as the cellular or PCS system. The customers must be within the coverage area in order to place or receive calls to or from anywhere in the world.

Cellular / PCS Terms:

CDMA:

Code Division Multiple Access; operates at 1900 MHX, used originally by the military is a new technology which provides digital transmission.

Cellular:

Traditional analog cellular operates between 800-850 MHZ. Cellular technology was introduced to the public in the early '80 as the first wireless phone service. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC), licensed two service provider in each market to provide cellular service.

Cells :

The cellular system divides a service territory into several radio coverage areas called cells.

Cell Sites:

At the center of the cell is the Cell Site. Each cell site has an antenna capable of receiving and transmitting calls simultaneously on low powered transmitters. A cell site can contain multiple cells to increase its capacity for higher volume usage in a metropolitan area.

 ESN :

Electronic Serial Number; the unique number assigned to a wireless phone by the manufacturer . It is fixed and unchangeable, sort of a finger print for each phone.

MTSO:

The MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office) is a switching station or large computer that is the "brains" of the cellular / PCS system which connects a wireless phone call to the public telephone network.

PCS :

Personal Communications Services; uses CDMA technology which operates at 1900 MHz using digital transmission.

 TDMA :

Time Division Multiple Access; operates in the same band width as traditional cellular but uses digital transmission.

What are the types of cellular phones?

There are three types of cellular phones: mobile, transportable, and portable.

Mobile:

A permanently installed unit in the vehicle that is powered by the car's battery. The mobile unit has up to three watts of power and can be used anywhere inside the cellular coverage area. This type of phone typically offers the best range within the cellular coverage area because of its full wattage and antenna placement. This phone is only used in cellular service and not available as a PCS unit.

Transportable:

This phone is self-contained and powered by its own battery (although many new models are powered by the cigarette lighter but offer a battery as an accessory, i.e. the bag phone). Transportable can also have up to three watts of power and offer similar range to a mobile if used with an external antenna when in the car (i.e. magnetic mount antenna). This phone can be carried while being used. It is sometime bulky but offers longer talktime than a portable due to the battery size. This phone is not widely available and is used only with cellular service and not available as a PCS unit.

Portable:

This phone is the most popular of all formats for both cellular and PCS because it is light-weight, contains its own rechargeable battery and can be easily carried in a pocket or purse. An optional car power cord can be purchased to save the battery life while in use in the car or even charge the battery in the car while traveling.
