Head Units

No other single piece of equipment will affect your enjoyment more than the in-dash cassette or CD "Head Unit", essentially the main control panel for your car stereo. The knobs and controls must be easy to use, and the displays easy to see. The tuner must be accurate as well as sensitive, and the built-in amplifier (on units so equipped) must deliver clean, pure sound at a reasonable volume level.

When it comes to head units, no other dealer can match Mobile One's selection. There are many factors which enter into the selection process of a new head unit :

1. Performance
2. Convenience
3. Integration with other existing systems(CD changer)
4. Replacement of the original car unit
5. Cost. To pick out the best Car Stereo Head Unit for you, consult the feature list below, then ask your Mobile One sales counselor to show you some models which match the features you have chosen

Feature Guide

Types of Car Stereo Units :

Shaft Mount:

found mainly in older vehicles a shaft mount is a traditional style unit with knobs on either side of the unit.

Din Mount

the mount of choice by most car manufactures - has a flush face which blends in well with the dashboard for a ore custom look.

Detachable Face:

Found only in DIN mount units, this popular feature lets you easily remove the control anel of your receiver and take it with you when you leave the car. The stereo is useless to thieves without the faceplate, so the temptation to break in your car is greatly reduced.

Theft Deterrent Head Units:

Some manufactures have built in anti theft devices; in the event a radio is stolen and loses power, an access code is required to reactivate the unit rendering the radio useless to a thief. Other manufactures have a built in car alarm. When you remove the faceplate, you activate the alarm; if the doors are opened or the alarm is tripped, the speakers emit an ear-piercing high-pitched alarm tone that will quickly drive a thief away.

In-Dash Head Unit Format:

Head units come in an array of formats, Cassette, Single CD, MiniDisc, Multi-Disc, Din &Half and Double Din. Cassette and Single CD players have been available for some time, however have you considered MiniDisc? MiniDisc is a recordable digital disc that fits in the palm of your hand. With a home MiniDisc recorder, you can put 74 minutes of your favorite music on a single disc and protect your CD collection from scratches and thieves by leaving them at home. Multi-Disc head units are available in both MiniDisc and CD formats. Some Din & half and Double Din head units are built with two formats, cassette and CD.

Single Compact Disc Players:

contain an AM/FM receiver plus a compact disc player in one chassis.

Multi-play Disc Players

(CD Stackers) can hold from 6 to 50 discs! They can frequently be added to any factory or after-market head unit.

Powered Head Units:

have built-in amplification to power up to four speakers.

Pre-Amp Head Units:

a pre-amp head unit does not have its own amplifier, it passes the signal to an external amplifier to produce cleaner sound, and allow for a more flexible installation. Some units have both built-in amps and pre-amp outputs, for even greater flexibility.

Common Cassette Deck Features :

Auto-Reverse:

At the end of one side of the tape, the mechanism changes direction automatically to play the other side.

Dolby Noise Reduction:

Decodes Dolby encoded tapes during playback to virtually eliminate tape hiss and background noise.

Tape Scan or Intro Play:

this feature plays 10 seconds of each track on your tape, then fast forwards to the next track of your cassette.

Common CD Deck Features :

Digital to Analog Converters:

The single most important piece in a CD player. The DAC converts digital information from your CD into electrical signals that pass through an amp and into your speakers. Most units use a 1 bit DAC, some even have 2 & 4 bit DAC's for even better sound reproduction.

Oversampling:

A "Digital Filter" that enables a CD player to produce a more accurate reproduction of the CD being played. The greater the oversampling the better the resolution.

Random Play:

Plays tracks on your disc in a random order, or if connected to a CD changer can play a whole magazine of CD's in random order.

Repeat Play:

will repeat a particular song or an entire CD disc over and over again.

Common Features On All Head Units :

Bass & Treble Controls:

allows you to custom tailor your sound to your tastes. Separate bass and treble adjustments provide much greater control than a single tone control.

Electronic Tuners:

"lock" into radio stations tuned frequency and cannot drift , once tuned.

Seek & Scan Tuning

Seek tunes up or down the broadcast band, stopping at the first listenable station. Scan locates each listenable station on the band, plays a brief sample, then moves to the next station.

Fader & Balance:

Fader gives you control of the front to back of your sound system, while balance controls left to right.

Loudness Switch:

at low volumes a loudness switch boosts the low frequencies for more base and a richer sound.

CD Changer Controls:

available in both cassette and CD head units, allows you to control an optional CD changer from the head unit.
